United States Constitution
Our Constitution grants no power to the federal government to be
involved in education. It is unConstitutional for the federal
government to collect taxes from Utah citizens, then tell us we may have
some of the money back if we will do certain things in our
schools. Our state school system is fast becoming federalized.
Utah State Constitution
The Utah Constitution calls for public schools at taxpayer expense. This was done as a
condition of statehood. Leaders of the LDS Church in early Utah
were strongly opposed to "free" public education and attempted
to maintain a private church school system, as did other churches in the
state. Unfortunately for today's Latter-day Saint population, the
earlier Saints chose the "free" system and Church leaders were
forced to close the Church schools and institute the release-time
seminary program instead.
Utah State Legislature
Utah legislators recognize that educational choice is necessary, partly
because it's the right thing to do and partly because they see massive
increases in the school-aged population over the next decade. We
will either suffer an enormous tax burden, or we will find alternatives
to education at the expense of citizens.
Utah State School Board
Although the members of the State Board are
elected, the candidates are chosen by the Governor. The State
Board is generally not supportive of home schooling.

Teachers' Unions
The Utah Education Association website
contains no published stand on home schooling but does say, "UEA is
an affiliate of the National Education Association, America's oldest and
largest organization committed to advancing the cause of public
education." The NEA is opposed to homeschooling.

Duty of Citizens
The Declaration of Independence declares who we are; the Constitution
outlines how we shall be governed. Every citizen has a duty to
participate at some level to uphold and protect the principles outlined
in these documents.
